As we are getting closer to the end of the year and more importantly closer to our one year trip I must say it’s getting really exciting now. We are about to close the plane ticket deal, renting out the apartment and now also working on selling our car.
I sure am going to miss the car (a beautiful Toyota Celica T Sport), but that’s about it – and after the first few days with a few cervezas on the beach I’m sure I’ll forget about that too!
Yes, my wife and I are closing the office for the whole of 2008 and traveling around the world.
We’ll do some blogging and having a Flickr gallery for sharing (available by request only).
Moving your whole electronic life from having a home base to not having one requires some magnificent changes. Specially in regard to information such as email, documents, pictures and so on.
Inspired by Scott Hanselman’s podcast Moving your Email into the Cloud - Google for Apps and Live Custom Domains I just moved my family’s email service over to Google for the luxury of having all my email on the road without the hassle of bringing some sort of gadget in the bag. After using it for a few days I must say I like the idea of always being able to reach all of my email history wherever there is a pc with an Internet connection that I can use.
To upload all my email I followed the tip from the podcast about using the gMove utility from Limitnone for uploading all my email (all though I had some crashes using the software). A big timesaver and absolutely worth the money. The big gaps I see so far is that the Google Reader service is now missing (!) and there is no easy way to merge/transfer my documents from the old Gmail account into the brand new Google Apps account.
It’s really effective this of concept Google by labeling the emails instead of putting them into folders – this way you can tag one email with several relevant labels. The downside as I see it is that there is no concept (for the tag or labeling concept in general in the world of it) to make some sort of label hierarchy. I guess I will get over the obsession of storing my information in some sort of nested labels/hierarchy approach as the idea of having only a flat hierarchy to work with – but I still struggle a bit on that one.
